A brief explination about before the civil war, and the important issues that went on.

Freedmen and Native Americans
This lesson is designed to have the students learn another view of slavery. Students will read and analyze two slave narratives. The students will create their own parallel slave diaries using source documents.

This Webquest is used during the Civil War and Reconstruction Unit. It is on slavery before the Civil War and on Slavery is today. It has several projects that students must complete to show there knowledge of what they have learned

Effects of the Cotton Gin on Life in the United States: Different Perspectives
This WebQuest was developed for 8th grade students in a gifted seminar setting. It delves into the effects the cotton gin had on various characters in the early 1800's and studies the interpersonal relationships of those characters. This WebQuest promotes higher level thinking skills. With modifications this WebQuest would work for other grade levels in regular classrooms.

Election of 1860 Project

Civil War News Cast
This is a webquest that directs students to create a Civil War News Cast. The students are in groups of four and each student has a role. The roles are reporting from an actual battle, interviewing a general, doing a statistical analysis between three battles about casulties, and giving a detailed report on the medical practices being used by either the North or the South.

A Personal Journal - Gettysburg - July 1,2,3, 1863
Students develop a character that is in Gettysburg, PA on July 1,2,3, 1863. They develop a journal entry for each of the three days of the famous battle. Along with the journal entry students create maps and pictures to go along with their journal entries

It has taken over a century for the U.S. to come to terms with the War Between the States. It was the costliest war in American history in terms of American lives. But how did we get to such a point?
