The quote that is highlighted in red is one I'm riding about. When Luke went to look out the window just to say something he was shot. When the car was leaving to take him to the prison hospital which was an hour away, his head turned and he was smiling. You could tell that he wanted to go, or else he wouldn't have gone to the window in the first place. He knew what the cops were going to do to him and he did it anyway. "They could tell right then that they weren't a-gonna beat him", this was saying to me that no matter what anyone did to him, he would be happy. In the end, he was dead but still had on that smile he always had.
