The International Labor Organization estimated 250 million children from ages 5-14 is working in developing countries. 61% (153 million) in Asia, 32% (80 million) in Africa, 7% (17.5 million) in Latin America. All these children are working worldwide in hazzardous conditions and often during beatings they would be humiliated and have sexual violence from their employers. The highest proportion of child laborers is in Sub-Saharan African children are involved in work.
Slavery would be defined as a civil relationship where one person controls and has absolute power over another and controls their life, liberty, and way of living.
There are a limitless amount of groups trying to do something about child labor. For example the International Labor Organization (ILO). International Program of the Elimination of Child Labor (IPEC), and UNICEF.
The children in West Africa are involved in producing cocoa sector. Many children today work because of their survival and that of their families depend on it. Child labor is an indicator of poverty and a low level of rual development. The children who produce it, ship it to the Western United States. They use the cocoa for chocolate and other things. But it takes 30% cocoa to become chocolate.
43% of the cocoa beans come from the ivory coast where recent investigators have found child slavery. In addition, cocoa workers who are paid receive wages that leave them at the edge of poverty and starvation. Girls mostly work in domestic labor and longer hours while boys work in construction for shorter hours. This is the reason why boys get more education than girls do.
To girls they are more vulnerable to sexual abuse and the consequences are social rejection, psychological trauma and unwanted motherhood. But for boys, they usually suffer from more injuries by carrying weights too heavy for their age, and stage for physical development.
But the ILO is trying to put a stop to child labor. And they are making progress. Not a huge prosses, but its enough to make a change. Their prosses according to UNICEF, an estimation of 246 million children are still working. Impoverished families or parents who are unable to work usually depend on their childrens income for survival.
We can all help out too. Child labor is the wmployment of children under age determined by law or custom. Prioritise primary education it is no coinidendence that the countries where child labor is worst are those that spend least on primary education. We can also try to regulate the global trade. The World Trade Organisation (WTO) is the international body charged with over seening and enforcing the rules of world trade as drawn up during the four decades of GATT negotiations. Strengthen unions trade unions are also played a crucial role in preventing and eliminating child labour. And last we should pass laws to regulate the employment of children in mines and factories.
