WW1 Scavenger Hunt
1. What is trench warfare? Describe how it was like during WW1.
The men were ordered to dig up deep, big wholes in the ground, called trenches. This was to stay out of the way of harm from the Germans. Without trenches, they would be able to easily attack. The trenches had little comfort and were often very small and hot and did not include toilets. The trenches were often only 40 meters away from the attackers and most died, trying to run into the trench.
2. During WW1, what new weapon made fighting trench warfare very difficult? What is a bayonet? What is it used for?
A bayonet is a knife (or sword) that is attached to the end of a rifle. Though, the hilt was smooth. It was specially designed to fit into a barrel of the musket, which means that it could not be reloaded. This made a big problem.
It was used by all sides from 1814-1818.
It was used for toasting bread, opening cans, scraping mud off uniforms, poking a trench brazier, also in assisting the preparation of communal latrines.
3. What new technology/weapons were developed during ww1?
· Flame thrower- used by Germans. Spreads fire by launched burning fuel.
· Bayonet- a knife or sword attached to the end of a rifle.
4. What is a dogfight (in aviation terms)?
Forms of aerial combat between fighter aircraft or maneuverings combat at short range, where each side is aware that the other is there. Firs introduced in Ww1, after the invention of airplanes came up.
5. There are many theories on why American troops were known as doughboys. Name two of them.
· Doughboy was a linguistic cousin to ‘Dough head’, this meaning stupidity in the 19th century.
· Also, that they were named this because of their method of cooking their rations. Their meals were often made of dough, or rice either cooked on a camp fire or around a bayonet.
6. Describe the navy’s use of a “Convoy system” to get troops and supplies across the Atlantic Ocean without getting sunk.
They improved the Convoy system, by gradually introducing it, as well as the increasing number of dedicated escort vessels to supplement fleet destroyers.
7. Who was the leader in Russia when this happened and why did they pull out?
Because of the war, there was a great amount of trouble and stress due to shortages of food and fuel in Russia. The hopes and confidence of the people in Russia had also been cut down, and these things made them needy for a new ruler. Czar, the ruler at that time, had to leave his place while new government promised to continue to fight. 1917; Communist leader Vladimir seized power. When, he decided to withdraw from war, he did so in order to fulfill the promise to peace.
8. What is the significance of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk? What did it do?
The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was an agreement between Russia and Central Powers. Made specially to end the latter’s participation in WW1, doing so without permission from the Allied Powers. It got the Allies to believe that Russia was not the power they thought that it was. It also, convinced American’s that to stop the German conquest of Europe, entry to the war was needed.
It removed certain territories from Russia.
9. What happened at the Battle of Argonne Forest?
The biggest battle fought by the American Expeditionary Force during the war; killing 26,277 and wounding 95,786 in just six weeks. It was the southern part of the great triple offensive, which broke the German lines on the Western Front. The main idea was to capture the railroad hub, which doing that would break the rail net supporting the German Army forcing the enemy’s withdrawal from their territories
10. On what date did the Great War (WW1) end?
It ended on November, 11, 1918.
11. A truce between two different armies to suspend hostilities in order to discuss peace terms.
